At seventeen, Rei Kiriyama carries the crushing weight of professional shogi on his shoulders, navigating the solitary world of competitive board games as a master burdened by his own exceptional talent. Estranged from his adoptive family and living entirely on his own in the bustling concrete expanse of Tokyo, Rei exists in a state of emotional hibernation, viewing life through the quiet, melancholic lens of a prodigy who skipped normal childhood milestones just to survive. The pressure to win every match consumes him, leaving little room for warmth, self-care, or genuine human connection until the winter chill gives way to an unexpected, life-changing shift.

Everything changes when Rei crosses paths with the Kawamoto sisters, three spirited young women running a traditional sweet shop across the river who pull him into their chaotic, deeply affectionate domestic orbit. Akane, the eldest, acts as a fierce maternal figure keeping the household together, while bright-eyed Hinata and young Momo offer a chaotic brand of unconditional kindness that slowly melts Rei's guarded exterior. Through shared meals around a kotatsu and quiet moments of understanding, this found family introduces Rei to the concept of emotional sustenance, forcing him to confront his past trauma and figure out who he is away from the shogi board.

The dynamic between Rei and the Kawamoto family forms the emotional beating heart of the series, contrasting the high-stakes, sweat-soaked tension of professional shogi matches with the soothing, sensory-rich warmth of home-cooked dinners. Another crucial relationship unfolds through his fierce rivalry and hidden friendship with Harunobu Nikaido, a self-proclaimed rival who battles chronic illness with booming optimism, pushing Rei to rediscover his passion for the game rather than treating it merely as a means to earn a living.
