Poverty, desperation, and blood define the daily grind for Denji, a young man crushed under the insurmountable debts of his deceased father. His only companion in this bleak existence is Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, a small, endearing creature with a chainsaw protruding from its snout. To survive the yakuza who exploit him, Denji works as a ruthless devil hunter, carving up fiends for spare change while dreaming of the simplest luxuries: a slice of bread with jam or a warm night indoors. Betrayed and left for dead by the very people who employed him, Denji merges with Pochita in a final, desperate pact, reborn as a terrifying hybrid with chainsaws erupting from his limbs and head.

Plunged into the brutal underworld of Public Safety Devil Hunters, Denji finds himself recruited by Makima, a mysterious and calculating government official who keeps him on a dangerously tight leash. Alongside eccentric teammates like the fiery blood fiend Power and the stoic, vengeance-driven Aki Hayakawa, Denji navigates a hyper-violent society where devils manifest directly from human fears. Yet, beneath the chaotic action, flying limbs, and dark humor lies a poignant coming-of-age story about a boy who has never experienced basic human affection, suddenly forced to figure out what he truly desires when all his physical needs are finally met.

Denji drives the narrative through his crude yet surprisingly grounded motivations, shifting the typical shonen hero archetype from saving the world to pursuing visceral, relatable desires like romance and comfort. Makima acts as the ultimate enigmatic force, a handler whose true intentions remain a constant source of tension and psychological dread for both Denji and the reader. Meanwhile, the volatile dynamic between Aki and Power provides both emotional anchor and comedic relief, forcing these deeply traumatized individuals to function as an unorthodox, found family amidst endless carnage.
